gohei

Asacred staff, or wand, with cut and folded paper streamers. During an incantation, the gohei served as a vessel for the god or as a conductor through which the god could enter the medium's body. The gohei was also used to attract the gods or it could be waved as a gesture of purification.

A prayer that was made in conjunction with the lighting of a large number of condles or oil lamps (not necessarily one hundred), which served as an offering to the deities.

ascetic monk

Here, this term refers to a practitioner of Shugendo, which was a form of mountain worship indigenous to Japan. These ascetic monks, known as shugenja or yamabushi, practiced austerities in the mountains and sought either to invoke or exorcise spirits by performing fires and the chanting of magical formulas.
