Jodo Wasan

A variety of Buddhist hymns composed in Japanese, as opposed to Sanskrit or Chinese. These hymns extol the virtue of the virtue of the Buddha and praise the Pure Land.

pribate school for children

 During the Edo period(1603-0867), pribate school or classrooms called "terakoya" were the most popular institutions to educate the children of commoners. They primarily taught reading, writing, and abacus arithmetic.

head of a group of local villages

 During the Edo period (1603-1867), the village head, known as shoya, was appointer by the lord of the clan to which the village belonged. Selected from among the prominent families in the village, the village head was responsible for collecting taxes and handling other administrative work. Village heads were, in turn, supervised by an ojoya, who was the "head of a group of local villages."

Inoko Festival

A festival held after the harvest season and before the coming of winter to give thanks for rich crops and to pray for health in the coming winter. Held on one of the two or three days of the boar that fall during the month of the boar (the tenth month of the lunar calendar), this harbest festival marked the day for making preparations for winter, such as setting up the heating device knows as kotatsu

purifying fire

This term refers to an esoteric Buddhist fire ritual, known as goma, in which the officiant made a fire using inscribed tablest as firewood and invoked the deity. This fire (symbolizing wisdom) was said to burn away defilements (symbolized by the firewood) and eradicate harmful influences caused by evil spirits.
