Jodo sect

A Buddhist sect, known as the Pure Land (Jodo) sect, which was founded by Honen. Rejecting the doctrine that aslvation can be attained through one's own effort, this sect stresses the recitation of the Nenbutsu ["Namu, Amida Butsu," which literally means "I take my refuge in the Buddha Amitabha (Infinite Light)"] however maintaining complete reliance on the power of the Buddha as the means to gain rebirth in the Pure Land Paradaise (Jodo), where the Buddha and Bodhisattvas are believed to dwell.
